Cleaning your jewellery at home is recommended. However, every 12 months or so we would recommend having your jewellery professionally cleaned and polished. Not only will it make your jewellery look like new again, but it is also an opportunity for your jeweller to check your settings and ensure your diamonds and gemstones and any fastenings are secure.
Here's do we do it.
Our Five-Step Cleaning Process
Check
Before we make a start on cleaning your jewellery we check your settings under a jeweller’s loupe. We check for loose diamonds or gemstones, damage to settings or vulnerable settings and any signs of wear that might develop into longer-term damage.
2. Clean
If your jewellery is in good condition, then we will start by cleaning your items in an ultrasonic jewellery cleaner, using chemical cleaning solution. The ultra-sonic vibrations dislodge any dirt and particles hiding in the tiny crevices of your settings or stuck to your precious metal or gemstones.
3. Polish
Once we have rinsed and dried your cleaned jewellery, it’s time for it to be buffed and polished on a high speed wheel. This is where all the tiny scratches and abrasions are polished out and the precious metal looks like new again.
4. Steam
The next step is to hold your jewellery in a powerful jet of steam. This is to get rid of any stubborn particles of dirt and leaves your jewellery sparkling and as beautiful as when it was new.
5. Check
Lastly, we check your jewellery again under the jeweller’s loupe to ensure all settings and fastenings are still secure and all diamonds and gemstones are safe.
Cleaning your jewellery at home
If your jewellery loses it lustre in between it’s annual clean and polish, you can easily bring the sparkle back, by following the simple steps below:-
Fill a bowl with warm (not hot) water, and add some washing up liquid.
Place your jewellery in the solution and leave it to soak for 10 minutes (making sure that you leave the bowl somewhere safe, so that your precious jewellery doesn’t accidentally get discarded!)
Brush with a soft bristles toothbrush, concentrating on the underneath of the setting.
Put the plug in the sink and rinse carefully.
Blot the water away with a lint free cloth.
How not to clean your jewellery at home!
Avoid any household cleaners such as bleach, chlorine, and acetone. These harsh chemicals can break down some of the metals in your ring. Also, never use any kind of abrasive products such as toothpaste, baking soda, or any powdered cleaners, which can damage precious metal.
Oh, and avoid at-home ultrasonic jewellery cleaning machines and dishwashers (yes, it has been known), especially if your ring features fine settings and gemstones. The reason is that prongs can be weakened or if there is the slightest gap between gemstone and setting, the vibrations from an ultrasonic machine can dislodge a gemstone very easily....and losing a gemstone or diamond is the last thing you want to happen.
If you have any concerns over the quality of your settings or you want advice on wear and tear then get in touch and we'll happily examine your ring or other jewellery items for you.
THE CREATION
Your gemstones will now be removed from their original setting. We will check all the measurements, and then the casting of your new piece can begin. We create a wax, from which the precious metal can be cast.
The raw casting is then tumbled, a process that removes any protrusions from the metal, prior to the more refined polishing
GEMSTONE SETTING
Now it's time to add the all important sparkle! Our goldsmiths begin the painstaking work of setting your gemstones. Our delicate rub-settings require the keenest eye and the steadiest hand.
POLISHING & QUALITY CHECK
Your Legacy jewellery will be cleaned and polished until it's absolutely dazzling. Final and rigorous quality checks are carried out to make sure your new piece is worthy of it's lifetime guarantee...
.....and ta-dah - it's time to be reunited.
