If you have a drawer full of inherited rings or a diamond you love but never wear, one of the first questions is always the same: what is the cost to remodel a ring in the UK? The honest answer is that every piece is different, but the price is far easier to understand than most people expect. This 2026 guide breaks down what you are really paying for, what pushes the price up or down, and how the gold you already own can reduce the bill.
The short answer: what does jewellery redesign cost?
At Legacy Jewellery in Harrogate, our indicative starting prices (all including VAT) are:
Remodelled rings: from £1,400
Remodelled pendants: from £800
Remodelled earrings: from £700
These are starting points for pieces created from a client’s own gemstones and sentimental gold. Because every design is bespoke, there is no fixed price list, but the examples below give a realistic picture of what to budget.
2026 jewellery remodelling price bands (UK)
£1,400 – £2,000 - A delicate, organic ring, such as a crossover design in your own sentimental gold, set with your own diamonds
£2,000 – £2,500 - A more substantial ring, such as a tapered double band, in sentimental gold with your own diamonds
£2,500 – £3,000 - A statement pendant in platinum, set with your own diamonds and a coloured gemstone
£3,000 – £4,000 - A larger design combining platinum and sentimental gold, set with several different gemstones
£4,000+ - An impressive showpiece in platinum with a large number of your own gemstones
What is included in the cost?
A remodelled piece is not an off-the-shelf product, so the price reflects a whole process rather than a single item:
Design development and an online design presentation
Assessment of your existing jewellery and gemstones
Manufacturing and gemstone setting
Independent hallmarking
A comprehensive insurance valuation
A lifetime manufacturing warranty
Secure return or collection arrangements
Before you commit to anything, you also receive a written quotation that sets out what is being reused, what is being returned to you and what is being offset.
What affects the cost to remodel a ring?
Five factors do most of the work in shaping a price:
Design intricacy. A simple band is quicker to make than a pavé, twisted or multi-gemstone design.
Choice of metal. Platinum is currently less expensive than 18ct gold, so if you need to buy new 18ct gold, the finished piece will tend to cost more than a platinum one. Reusing your old gold can be the most cost-effective way of creating a new piece. Mixing metals adds complexity, so a ring combining platinum and 18ct gold costs more than one made in platinum alone.
Number of gemstones. Every gemstone has to be carefully unset, checked and reset, so ten small diamonds take more labour than one.
Finger size. A larger size uses more metal.
Depth, width and weight. A wide, deep, heavy ring uses more material than a fine one.
Having a budget in mind at the start helps enormously. A good designer can steer the design to suit it.
Custom CAD design: why it matters for cost
Many modern remodelling studios use CAD (computer-aided design) to build a 3D model of your piece before anything is made. It is part of the cost, but it usually saves money overall. You can see the ring from every angle, change proportions and check how your gemstones will sit before any metal is cast. That means fewer surprises, fewer remakes and a design you have approved in full before work begins. At Legacy, nothing is altered until you have signed off both the design and the quotation.
Cost to melt gold into a new ring
People often search for the cost to melt gold into a new ring as if melting were a separate service. In reality, melting is a small part of the work. The cost sits in designing, casting or fabricating, finishing, setting your gemstones and hallmarking the finished piece.
What reusing your own gold changes is the material cost. If your old gold is suitable, it can be refined or reworked into the new design instead of buying new metal. Not all gold can be reused in the way first imagined (older solder, mixed alloys and damaged pieces can all affect suitability), so an honest assessment up front is essential. We cover this in detail in our guide to melting down old gold rings.
How your unused gold can offset the cost
This is the part most people do not know about. Any precious metal you do not need for your new design does not have to sit in a drawer or be sold to a high-street gold buyer. At Legacy, the value of unused gold can be offset against the cost of your new piece, or the metal can be returned to you along with any spare gemstones. Your quotation shows the value offered, valid for seven days, so you can see exactly how much it reduces the final price.
Practical examples of metal that often qualifies: broken chains, single earrings, damaged or unwanted rings and old-fashioned bracelets that will not feature in the new design.
How to keep the cost of remodelling down
Reuse your own gemstones. Precious gemstones you already own are the most valuable part of the project.
Offset unused gold. Bring every piece of precious metal you are willing to part with.
Choose a simpler setting. Fewer, better-placed gemstones can look more elegant and cost less to set.
Consider your own gold over platinum. Using your own sentimental gold avoids buying new metal.
Share your budget early. It shapes the design from day one.
