Remodelling Mum’s Jewellery
Karen’s Story
“Creating a ring I can wear and feel close to her again is going to be part of my healing.”
I had a message from one of the team that a lady called Karen had called and could I please call her back. She was very emotional. Her mum had recently passed away and she wanted to speak to me about her mum’s jewellery.
Of course, I said.
Karen answered the phone almost immediately. Her voice was shaky and thick with emotion. I told her I was sorry to hear about the passing of her mum.
I told her that I had also lost my mum, so I understood how suddenly the shock and grief could hit.
I asked her how long it had been since her mum passed.
Last Friday, she said.
Four days earlier.
I was surprised.
I have worked with countless women and some men who have been recently bereaved, but no one had ever contacted me this soon after a bereavement.
I explained that there was no rush. We could certainly chat about her mum’s jewellery and I could answer any questions, but if she felt that this was too soon, or too painful, we could press pause at any time.
She told me that she was ready. That this was going to be part of her healing journey.
She booked an appointment for the following week, and we began exploring her designs.
Karen’s Design Brief
Original jewellery: Her mum’s 22ct gold wedding ring, three family diamond rings and an old diamond pendant.
Precious metals: Reuse Mum’s 22ct gold wedding ring and offset the value of any other unused precious metal against the cost of Karen’s Legacy ring.
Design direction: Create an organic, flowing, two-colour design incorporating all four family diamonds and Mum’s 22ct gold, while exploring the addition of carefully selected new diamonds.
Finished piece: A bespoke Legacy ring created in platinum and Mum’s sentimental 22ct gold.
Karen knew she wanted a two-colour design using platinum and the 22ct gold from her mum’s wedding ring.
She wanted the design to be organic and flowing in nature, but wearable and unique.
She wanted to include all four of her diamonds and was open to adding new diamonds to complete the design.
Designing Karen’s Legacy Ring
Karen’s mum loved flowers and nature. Karen was therefore open to introducing a marquise-cut diamond, a subtle reference to her mum’s love of the natural world, as well as a symbol of new beginnings and the coming together of generations.
Karen’s Completed Legacy Ring
Karen’s completed ring was an unusual, organic design that brought together her mum’s 22ct gold wedding ring, four family diamonds and a newly added marquise-cut diamond. The combination of warm gold and platinum preserved its family history while creating something distinctly Karen’s own.

“Although difficult circumstances led me to finding Legacy Jewellery the compassion and empathy they showed me made it such a positive experience. I immediately felt at ease and as though they cared about it as much as I did and importantly went at my pace.
The design utilised my precious family jewels and I added in a diamond so that it was multi generational. It was tweaked until it was something spectacularly beautiful, ensuring I was completely happy with it. I will treasure it forever and wear every day. I can easily recommend them. The little additional touches and details were very much appreciated.”
